The Colorado State Historical Fund draws its revenues from a special tax on limited-stakes casino gaming in Central City, Black Hawk, and Cripple Creek. That seems only fitting. Colorado history, after all, has been full of gambles—beginning with the gold rushes to Central City and Black Hawk back in 1859. Ever since, Coloradans have been pressing their luck and taking their chances—on gold and silver, cattle and timber, railroads and ski resorts, oil rigs and dot-coms. And whatever the outcome, boom or bust, new players have always been eager to ante up for another deal.

They have generally preferred to wager on tomorrow rather than yesterday, betting everything on the next draw from the deck. The State Historical Fund, though, operates from the opposite premise: that the best bets are often the cards you already hold in your hand. Created in 1990 by a voter-approved constitutional amendment, the fund helps communities to preserve the buildings, landscapes, and neighborhoods that have shaped their identity. In just over a decade, the Fund has underwritten nearly 2,000 projects to the tune of $100 million.

And how have those bets paid off? Walk into the elegant, newly restored Montrose County Courthouse and decide for yourself. Or take a ride on the Georgetown Loop Railroad. Or browse through the Denver Public Library’s online collection of digitized photographs. Or enjoy a concert at Boulder’s Chautauqua Auditorium. As the largest state historic-preservation program in the nation, the Colorado State Historical Fund helps communities make history a vital part of the present and future. The stakes couldn’t be higher—for ourselves, and for our descendants.
