The Colorado Historical Society's 20th Century Colorado Project, a ten-year, decade-by-decade exhibit chronicling the state's last one hundred years, helped to launch one of the most extensive collecting initiatives in the Society's history. Begun in 1990, the project's collection objectives are twofold: to acquire representative materials from the second half of the twentieth century, and to increase public awareness of the importance of contemporary objects for the understanding and appreciation of the state's past. This new emphasis on collecting for the future has allowed curatorial staff at all of the Colorado Historical Society's regional museums to help define the interests, values, and concerns of Colorado's people today. The Society has also established a number of advisory councils, as well as a major campaign to seek historical materials from African-American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, gay and lesbian, and other communities within the state. This effort has helped to expand the Society's collections through an informed awareness of social change and the recognition of emerging trends in Colorado's cultural life.
