| Founded in 1993, the African American Advisory
Council gives direction and support to Society programs and provides
a valuable link between the Society and the African American
community throughout Colorado. Working with Society staff, the
Council has generated several exhibitions, public education
programs, tours and treks, and fundraising events. Primary among the
Councils long-term goals, and part of its mission
statement, has
been the development of a permanent fellowship program for African
American students. In 2002, with generous funding by the Sachs
Foundation, the Council succeeded in establishing an ongoing
internship program.
Among the Societys Council-supported exhibitions are Its
Jazz: Black Musicians in Colorado, 18901950 (199495), Buffalo
Soldiers West (199596; now a continuing exhibit at the Fort
Garland Museum), and Invisible Hero: The Untold Story of the
Black Cowboy (19982000). Associated with these exhibits, the
Society published a special issue of Colorado Heritage
magazine (Spring 1996) on the Buffalo Soldiers and "Of Myth and
Men: The Trail of the Black Cowboy," by staff member Keith
Schrum (Colorado Heritage, Autumn 1998). The Council has also
developed and funded tours to Fort Garland; a trek to Lincoln Hills,
Colorados black-only resort; and a walking tour of Five Points.
In addition, the Council helped to create Old Stories, New
Voices, a living-history, intercultural camp serving at-risk
youth.
