The Material Culture Department accepts graduate and post-graduate
students with an academic background in anthropology, history, American
Studies, or related disciplines who are interested in aspects of
curation, collections management, exhibit research and development,
and collections care. Interns work with portions of the 110,000-item
material culture collection which includes costumes and accessories,
textiles, American Indian objects, tools and industrial equipment,
political and military items, archaeological artifacts, firearms,
and a variety of ethnic materials. As the department oversees five
museums/sites across the state, interns will have the opportunity
to assist with a range of interpretive and planning projects on
a number of topics. The department also manages the museum's compliance
activity for repatriation of Indian materials.
