Organization of the Subject Collection:
The subject collection of historic photographs covers all aspects
of Colorado history. These positive prints were either made by the
photographer or are copy prints. They are stored in envelopes arranged
by subject term. Subject
headings are arranged alphabetically, except for portraits (BPF),
which are filed last. Subheadings are used where there are many
photographs in a category.
Places
The collection is geographically oriented whenever possible. Photographs
of cities are filed under the heading "Cities and Towns" (C-). Photos
of Colorado scenery are filed under the heading "Natural Features"
(NF).
People
Portraits of individuals are filed under the heading "Biographical
Portrait File" (BPF) and are arranged alphabetically by last name.
Portraits of Native Americans are filed alphabetically by name in
the "Indian Biographical File" (IBF).
Photographs of people engaging in activities may be found may be
found under many headings, such as, "Occupations," "Organizations,"
"Recreation," "Celebrations," "Children," and "Clothing."
Dates
Many of the photographs in the subject collection are not dated.
If a date is known, it will be written on the back of the photograph.
In some cases, dated photographs are grouped together, as in C-Denver-1870s
or Clothing-1890s.
