Film Negatives
The Colorado Historical Society has many collections that consist
primarily of glass plate or film negatives.
Both glass and film negatives are fragile, harmed by light, and
easily damaged by handling. The negative is irreplaceable, since
it is the source of the image and, once damaged, will never produce
another high quality print. Glass and film negatives may be seen
by appointment only through the photography department. Curatorial
staff will pull requested negatives from the files and arrange them
on a light table for viewing.
In many cases, study prints have been made from the negatives.
Where study prints are available, library visitors may view the
study prints. Images from some of the glass negative collections
are also available for viewing at http://photoswest.org.
Contact the library
for more information about the photograph collection.
