In 1907-1908 the Colorado & Southern Railway advanced money for purchase of a tier of blocks in Dallas, Texas. The original intention for this acquisition was to make use of the property for terminal facilities of the Trinity & Brazos Valley Railway. Deeds to the property were all originally made in the name of Royal A. Ferris, trustee. Ferris, president of the American Exchange Bank in Dallas, had been active in urging the railroads to build terminals in that city. The Colorado & Southern controlled the terminal company entirely.

Revenue from monthly rental of the houses on the property was the only resource of the Dallas Terminal Company. The company used the rental revenue to pay interest on the advances made by the Colorado & Southern and to pay taxes, insurance and repairs. As the Colorado & Southern's agent, Ferris became familiar with the property, sought information on possible purchases, handled insurance and saw that taxes were paid. The Dallas company of Murphy and Bolanz administered the property for the trustee.

In 1914 Ferris resigned as trustee and was succeeded by F. H. Rawson. By this date, the only structure from which rentals were received was a four story brick warehouse. All other structures on the property were decrepit and not rented. After the plan for construction of terminal facilities was abandoned, the Colorado & Southern spent many years attempting to dispose of the property without incurring a loss. Much of the property was sold in 1917.

The Dallas Terminal Company was apparently never chartered or incorporated. Records eventually refer to the "Dallas property" rather than to an organization. Records created between 1907-1914 were maintained by L.H. Attwell, auditor. E.I. Grenfell (1914-1916) and W.C. Logan (1916-1925) maintained records while acting as agents for Rawson. When Ferris resigned, changes in documentation occurred and monthly reports were sent directly to Colorado and Southern’s General Auditor, J. H. Bradbury, whose records are included in this collection.

The collection consists of correspondence, real estate records, the auditor’s journal, statements, checks, receipts and vouchers submitted by Ferris, and insurance policies and records regarding the Dallas property. The records were created during the period 1901-1946.
