The collection consists of thousands of maps ranging in size from
a few square inches to rolled railroad maps many yards long. Maps
cover Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West from the time of Spanish
exploration to the present. In addition to illustrating topography
and location of natural features and towns, the maps cover many
subjects such as:
| · bird's-eye view |
· historical sites
|
| · Indian tribe locations
over time |
· land grants |
| · mines & mining claims
|
· railroad routes |
| · road
systems |
· stage
routes |
The Society's collection of Sanborn Insurance Atlases,
available
in microfilm format, include detailed views of streets and buildings
for many Colorado towns from the 1880s. In larger cities, the maps
were updated periodically to show the growth of the city over time.
