SANBORN INSURANCE ATLASES Back to: | Maps | House History |
The Sanborn Map Company was the largest producer of insurance atlases in the
United States. Maps illustrating the built-up areas of cities were
published and updated periodically by traveling surveyors so that insurance
companies referring to the maps would have reliable, current information to make
decisions about insurance risks and rates. Today the Sanborn Atlases are
important tools in carrying out building preservation research.
The table below shows the Sanborn Insurance Atlases available on microfilm in
the Stephen H. Hart Library. The table shows the cities included,
the dates the maps were created or updated, as well as the number of sheets for
each town.
