Descansos and Traditions in Remembering the Dead
On exhibit now!
A wooden cross that stands as a lonely reminder beside the interstate, a teddy bear atop a grave marker, or names etched in granite—each one evokes diverse emotions in the mourners and passersby.
Delve into the origins of grieving traditions, from roadside memorials called “descansos” to the history of cemeteries and the development of mourning traditions over the ages. This new exhibit, explores how memorials and cemeteries tell stories and serve as remembrances of events and people.
