Activities for Kids and Families - Let's Make History

Let's Make History
Who makes history? You do! Join the Colorado History Museum for Let's Make History, a weekend program just for families. Activities for all ages are offered each Saturday from
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Touch the past with artifacts and objects, try your hand at various crafts and activities, watch an expert demonstrate a skill, and feel the rhythm of song and dance. Each week's activities celebrate a different theme. Free with museum admission, and Saturday admission is free for children 12 and under. Sponsored by US Bank.

May 23 - The Doctor Is In
Home remedies were once used to treat everything from toothaches to asthma. Taste-test a series of home teas and mouth washes. Then make your own toothpaste to try at home.

May 30 - Soldiers on Skis
Learn about the 10th Mountain Division and Colorado’s role in World War II. See some of the equipment they used, explore the 10th Mountain Division touch cart, tour the exhibit, and create your own division emblem.

June 6 - Colorado’s Japanese
Colorado’s first Japanese immigrants worked on railroads, in coal mines, and on farms. Learn about their contributions to the state and celebrate their enduring legacy.

June 13 - Plains Indians
Explore 1800s Plains Indian culture by handling replicas of their tools and then try your hand at some traditional crafts.

June 20 - Mountains, Maps, and Me
How did trappers, miners, and explorers find their way through Colorado without a car, telephone, towns, or GPS? Join us by the plank house to find out how they did it, then touch some artifacts, experiment with a compass, and make your own map to take home.

June 27- Let’s Play Ball
With two Super Bowl wins, two Stanley Cup championships, and a trip to the World Series, sports crazy Coloradans have had a lot to celebrate. Take a swing at making your own ball and decorating a “jersey.”

July 4 - Celebrate Colorado
Colorado, “the Centennial State,” achieved statehood one hundred years after the birth of the United States. Celebrate the Fourth of July with glitter fireworks, the American flag, and lemonade.

July 11 - News Today, History Tomorrow
William Byers founded the Rocky Mountain News a few months after the gold rush began. Today newspapers, television, and the Internet continue to spread the news.  Create a news-page of your own using old newspapers.

July - 18 All aboard!
Railroads put Colorado on the beaten track. Learn how the iron horse changed the state by running our mini model train and make a paper model to add to our toy railroad.
